World Ocean Day Writing Contest

Blacks Harbour, NB – April 20, 2009 - Eastern Charlote Waterways Inc. (ECW) invites Grade 9-12 students from Charlotte County to submit articles for the World Ocean Day Writing Contest. The contest encourages young people to take an interest in the ocean and environment and to share their knowledge of the ocean with others.  The winning article will be featured during the same week as World Ocean Day (June 8) in ECW’s bi-weekly newspaper column “Saving the Green”, which is published in the St. Croix Courier.  As well, the articles will be added to the Saving the Green archive on ECW’s website and the winner will receive The Blue Planet DVD box set.

While students are permitted to choose the topic for their article, it must have an ocean and/or environmental theme.  The article should be geared toward a general audience, should not take an advocacy stance, and should not contain profanity, obscenity, ageism, racism or sexism. Articles should be approximately one page in length, typed and single-spaced.

Article submissions will be accepted from April 21-May 22, 2009, with only one entry per person accepted.  Students are asked to email their submissions to Melissa Price at ecwinc@nb.aibn.com (subject line “World Ocean Day Writing Contest”). When emailing their article submission students should include the article as an attachment, and in the body of the email include the title of their article, their name, grade, school, home address, phone number and email address. Judging will be blind so none of the student’s personal information should appear on the article itself, to ensure anonymity and fairness.

Staff at ECW encourages all Canadians to take part in World Ocean Day on June 8, Canadian Environment Week from May 31-June 6, 2009 and Earth Day on April 22. These special occasions raise awareness of issues facing our oceans and environment and demonstrate the need for action to protect and restore these important assets that provides for all of our needs.
